FAQs

How does Shark Safe certification differ from other certification programs like Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification?

While we share many of the same principles as the Marine Stewardship Council, and have utilized some of their research in the development of the Shark Safe Standard, the MSC certifies fisheries and products, while Shark Safe is a designation intended for establishments and select businesses.

What are the requirements for Shark Safe certification?

Visit the Shark Safe Program Page for more information, or click here to download a copy of the Shark Safe Standards.

Who designed the Shark Safe logo?

The first design was loosely inspired by the Earth Island Institute's Dolphin Safe logo, and was created by Jim Toomey, the artist behind the popular syndicated cartoon Sherman's Lagoon. The Shark Safe logo has seen a number of revisions and Tim Fuller, a local designer, developed the ellipse that encircles the shark in the current version of the logo.

How did the Shark Safe concept originate?

A detailed history can be found on the Shark Safe Program Page.
